For those with time for an overnight ride mid-week, a ride will depart Canberra for Tumblong, camping at the back of the Tumblong Tavern on Wednesday, 27th March; returning Maundy Thursday, 28th March.
For those tuned into social media, find the Tavern’s FacePlant page here: https://www.facebook.com/TumblongTavern ]
Departure: Meet at the EG Ampol Hume service station car park, fuelled up and ready to ride for a 10:30 AM departure. If you’re planning to meet up along the way and not at EG Ampol Hume please let me know.
Outbound route: Via Monaro Hwy to Cooma, then Snowy Mountains Highway to Adaminaby, Talbingo, Tumut, Adelong, arriving at the Tumblong Tavern, around 3:00 PM. Google Map route here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/eeQoNmFaHChhQo6q8
Break: We’ll take a break for lunch and fuel top up at Adaminaby.
Accommodation: The Tavern has no in-pub accommodation but welcomes folks to use the grassed area at the rear of the pub to camp. So, be sure to pack a tent, sleeping bag, ground mat, etc.
Meals: The pub has the usual selection of pub meals [the pub currently has a “Cash-is-King” promotion, giving a $2 discount off meals for those paying cash].
Inbound route:
1. Planned return is via Adelong and Batlow to Tumbarumba; then via the Elliot Way and Link Road to Kiandra and then Snowy Mountains and Monaro Highways. Google Maps route for this option here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ny6pGANey2o6d1eJ9
2. Other options for those needing to get home quickly are reverse of the outbound route, via the Snowy Mountains and Monaro Highways; or via the Hume and Barton Highways.
Gravel: There’s plenty of gravel routes to Tumblong too; as many GS riders would already be familiar, for example:
- Bobeyan Road from Tharwa, through Namadgi NP to Adaminaby.
- Brindabella Road via Cotter, Uriarra Village, Piccadilly Circus, Brindabella Valley, Bondo Forest Camp to Tumut
Registration: Please use the ride registration feature, as it ensures that we can give the pub an idea of how many - or how few - to expect for catering purposes.
